ENO Tree Planting Day - 24 hours planting trees around
the world by kids
ENO Programme organised a special tree planting day for schools and children/youth groups around the world. Schools planted trees at noon local time, on the 22nd of September 2008. Trees were planted for the environmental protection and peace. The day also united us as it's the day for equinox. The length of the day is the same everywhere, with everyone worldwide receiving 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. As the international day for peace falls a day before, this is also our contribution for peace.
This 24-hour event started in a massive way on Tonga islands where all the 170 primary schools planted around 30 000 trees. Following the Sun, new trees were put to earth in Asia, Europe and Africa. Finally this chain of trees reached Americas. The event ended on Samoa islands where the last trees were planted. Planet Earth had rotated on its axis.
Over 1 500 schools in 121 countries registered and made a pledge of altogether 300 000 trees. This event was a part of tree planting campaign, its aim is to plant 100 million trees by 2017 when Finland will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
